Wonder Beirut: Postcards of War (1997-2006)

Appropriated postcards. Courtesy of the artists.

In 1975, Abdallah Farah, a pyromaniac photographer, began to systematically burn iconic postcards of Beirut to mimic the unfolding devastation of the city by the ravaging war. Farah, a fictional character invented by Hadjithomas and Joreige, plays a key role in the artists’ multifaceted project Wonder Beirut, intended to keep the memory of the Lebanese wars alive. The project was created in response to the reconstruction of Beirut undertaken by SOLIDAIRE, a government-supported institution that sought to eradicate the traces of war, idealize Beirut’s past, and project a prewar golden age upon the city’s uncertain future.

Note: The postcards are free to take.
