Lamia Joreige Beirut, Lebanon Here and Perhaps Elsewhere (2009) Interactive website. Courtesy of the artist Joreige uses the title of her 2003 documentary film for this web-based interactive story about a young man who went missing along the Green Line during the war. An inquiry into his destiny introduces us to the lives of a sniper, two elderly people, a militia man, and an anonymous woman, each of whom claims that he/she had killed the person in question. The work is inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s film Rashomon (1950), in which eye-witnesses provide contradicting testimonies of the same crime. Joreige wanted to elaborate on the notion of relative truth in the context of the Lebanese wars. |
